Technical APPRENTICESHIPS

 

Level 3 - Engineering Design and Draughtsperson

Overview

Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for piping, electrical systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction. Typically, jobholders work in a wide range of industries of national importance including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, food and drink processing. Jobholders are based at office locations within project design teams and occasionally work at on-site locations. They are required to understand on-site hazards and health and safety requirements. The jobholder must: Understand technical drawings and specifications and be able to create their own; identify factors likely to affect design decisions; produce CAD (computer aided design) models and engineering drawings and; be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.
There are several main disciplines within the occupation of Engineering Design and Draughtsperson.

At Seta an apprentice gains an understanding across all these disciplines and will typically specialise in one or more:

  • Electrical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Mechanical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Piping Design and Draughtsperson

Level 3 - Engineering Technician - Product Design and Development Technician

Overview

Product Design & Development Technicians primarily work on all stages of product creation and modification. They support activities ranging from early concept feasibility, design and development stages right through to final preparation for launch and customers. This includes working in concept studios, rapid prototyping, assembly, testing, validating and analysing performance. Typically, they work closely with engineers in bring new concepts to life or supporting redesigns of existing products.

Level 3 - Engineering Technician - Technical Support Technician

Overview

Technical Support Technicians, work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the Engineering and Manufacturing function including communications software, test, analysis tools, measurement, off line programming, process control, performance and continuous improvement solutions, capacity planning, production scheduling/planning, product technical applications and capability, technical sales and marketing support, product development and innovation, engineering drawing, purchasing and/or supply of goods or services for engineering activities, quality control, inspection and e-commerce technologies as required. The requirements are designed to offer stretch and progression. They will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of the work they undertake. They will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business.

Level 3 - Safety, Health and Environment Technician

Overview

The SHE Technician will be able to work in organisations of varying size and industry; the role could be based in one location or may involve travel across a range of contracts. The role will be partly office based and partly at the work front providing advice to others on how to work without harming themselves or others. The Technician will work with the management and delivery team of the organisation to advise on the statutory health, safety and environmental requirements as they affect the company’s operations. They will assist the management team in ensuring that the legal and company SHE requirements are implemented. On a daily basis the SHE Technician will assist to develop, review and check on the implementation of safe systems of work, deliver training (e.g. toolbox talks & inductions), investigate incidents, analyse data and present findings to the management team. The SHE Technician will engage with all aspects of the organisation to support the embedment of a culture that ensures everyone is able to return to their family and friends unharmed every day whilst also protecting and enhancing the global land, air and water resources for future generations. This will be achieved by inspiring and influencing others to see the benefit of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework and showing how safety, health and environmental management can enhance operational activities.

Level 3 - Surface Finisher

Overview

This occupation is found in the engineering and manufacturing sector within the marine, aviation and automotive industries. Surface finishers may work for boat manufacturers, refit and repair boatyards, marinas, specialist marine companies, aerospace manufacturing, repair and restoration companies and automotive manufacturers including ‘supercar’ manufacturers and motorsport companies. These can be small, medium or large businesses. Surface finishers can undertake work on a variety of products including for example motorised cruisers, narrowboats, sailing boats, work boats, superyachts, high end vehicles, supercars, private jets and commercial aircraft. This is a core and options apprenticeship standard. Apprentices will be trained and assessed against the core and one option. There are three options: 1. Marine surface finisher 2. Aviation surface finisher 3. Automotive surface finisher.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with the immediate team such as production staff, quality assurance staff and specialist trades such as engineers, boat builders, riggers, carpenters, welders and electricians. They also liaise with other departments regularly, such as sales, health and safety, human resources, audit and training. Surface finishers may also have contact with external technical paint representatives, contractors, customers and suppliers. Surface finishers work in paint preparation workshops, finishing spray booths, tented areas, product interiors and other outside environments. These areas house a range of specialist tools and equipment, which could include a maintenance area, mixing area and adjoining workshops.

Level 3 - Battery Manufacturing Technician

Overview

Battery manufacturing technicians are found in the process manufacturing sector, producing cells and batteries.

Cells and batteries store chemical energy and convert it to electrical energy. A cell is a single unit, whereas two or more cells is a battery. They are used in transport - micro-mobility such as scooters and bikes, cars, vans, lorries, buses, trains, planes, and ships. Domestic applications such as power walls. Power industry grid balancing facilities. Mobile phones and laptops and many more. Batteries play a key role in the environmental agenda, providing storage for renewable energy generation and power to electric vehicles.

This is a core and options apprenticeship. An apprentice must be trained and assessed on the core and one option relevant to their role. The options are:

  • Option 1. Electrode technician
  • Option 2. Cell assembly technician
  • Option 3. Ageing, formation and testing technician
  • Option 4. Module and pack technician

Battery manufacturing technicians prepare for and conduct processes in one stage of cell or battery manufacture. Electrode technicians produce the component that goes in battery cells. They perform processes such as mixing, coating, drying, calendering, and electrode slitting. Cell assembly technicians make individual cells performing processes such as winding, stacking, filling, and sealing. Formation technicians perform formation, ageing and testing processes and final inspection of cells, ensuring cells are charged and working. Module and pack technicians combine individual cells to make battery modules and packs, and conduct end of line testing and cell finishing. In relation to the stage that they work in, technicians conduct quality assurance and maintain process records. Maintaining workplace health, safety and environment is also key. Technicians also support other activities including continuous improvement, inventory control, and maintenance.

Level 3 - Bulk Storage Terminal Technician

Overview

Bulk storage terminal technicians work in bulk storage terminals.

Bulk storage terminals provide storage and logistics infrastructure services. They provide an essential link in the supply chain for a large variety of products including transport and heating fuels, gasses, chemicals, and food-grade products such as animal feeds and fats, oils, and molasses. Bulk storage terminals provide and support an essential interface between sea, road, rail, waterway, and pipeline logistics and are strategically located in ports and airports, logistic platforms, along rivers, canals, and pipelines. Bulk storage ensures that products are supplied when they are needed and in the quantities required. Many terminals are designated as critical national infrastructure by the UK Government - necessary for a country to function and upon which daily life depends.

As national and international efforts to tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions become ever more important, the bulk storage sector will continue to grow in the coming years. From helping to unlock the potential of hydrogen, to the scale up of sustainable biofuels, the industry will have a key role to play in energy transition.

Level 4 - Automation and Controls Engineering Technician

Overview

This occupation is found in cross sector (e.g. Automotive, Food and Drink, Oil and Gas, Pharmaceutical, Construction), companies involved in manufacturing (discrete or process), logistics or utilities environments.  These employers may be directly involved in these activities or as a provider of services (e.g. systems integration, field service, technical consultancy) to these companies.

The broad purpose of the occupation is twofold.

Where the role is based inside a manufacturing (discrete or process), logistics or utilities environments, a fully competent Automation and Control Engineering Technician will be able to install, maintain, fault find and optimise hardware and software for automation systems.
