At EGGER we are celebrating the women employed in engineering roles by chatting to one of our electrical apprentice engineers, Thea.
What sparked your interest in engineering?
I had always loved engines growing up, and when my dad took me to Goodwood Festival of Speed as a child, it made me realise that I wanted to be an engineer.
What’s the gender ratio like within your industry?
Most of my colleagues in the engineering department are men, we currently only have three women. I think more girls are interested in applying for engineering positions however they often don’t have the confidence in a male-dominated environment.
What excites you about your role?
I enjoy the fact that I never know what new skills I will be learning and putting into practice each day, I also enjoy working in a friendly and welcoming environment.
What can educators and companies do to encourage more young women to pursue STEM educational paths?
I think a lot has already been done to encourage women into engineering, I think we need to try to help women build their confidence and make them feel welcomed into the engineering industry which unfortunately can still be seen as a man’s world.
