For his dedication and hard work on the HNC, Liam was awarded a Recognition of Outstanding Achievement certificate from Seta

So what’s Liam’s story and how is working life at Siemens PLC?

Let’s find out!

Why did you decide to take up the apprenticeship route?

I took an Electrical Engineering Level 3 course at college and after I left, I thought I would go into an apprenticeship, because I wanted to get work experience alongside studying for a qualification. It was good to take the step up from Level 3 to Level 4.

What’s life been like for you at Siemens?

When I first joined Siemens as an apprentice I was 17 and it was a whole new experience for me. It is a huge company with massive offices. There were so many names to remember and people to meet. But I quickly got used to it!

The team here at Siemens are great and make it a very enjoyable place to work. They are mentoring me through my apprenticeship and help me when I need support.

Is there a particular type of work you enjoy?

The cybersecurity work I have been doing has definitely been my favourite so far. I am learning about how to protect electricity substations and working on intrusion detection systems. It’s really interesting.

What would you say to anyone considering taking up an apprenticeship?

Go for it! You’ll get real life, hands-on work experience, meet new people and get the opportunity to be part of a company when you are still studying. It’s a great combination.

And do you have any advice for someone who’ll be starting an apprenticeship soon?

Give it your all and get to know the people you are working with. Learn from them. Ask as many questions as you can. There are always things you want to know and things you won't fully understand at first. There are no silly questions!

Siemens PLC creates technology with purpose, for its people, customers and the future. It develops resource-efficient factories, resilient supply chains, smarter buildings and grids, cleaner transport systems, and careers that make a difference. It makes an impact on industry, infrastructure, sustainability and mobility.
