MEET JACK – FORMER SETA APPRENTICE
Jack is going places in his engineering career… including all over the UK!
He recently completed a Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship through Seta at Hebburn-based Aardvarc Electrical Engineers Ltd, which specialises in high voltage engineering services.
And he’s now taking the next steps in his career at the company, working on the equipment which keeps homes and businesses powered.
So what’s Jack’s story? Let’s find out…
Why did you want to take up an apprenticeship?
I had finished my A-levels, but I didn’t really fancy going to university. I thought an apprenticeship would be a good way to get a trade, and it would be more productive. I’m glad I made that choice!
You studied for a year at Seta during your apprenticeship. How was that experience?
The tutors and facilities were spot on!
Because the tutors had all worked in engineering before, they were very experienced. You could tell that they had come from industrial backgrounds. They’d help you work through anything you couldn’t understand.
I learned practical skills, how to solve problems and how to work in a team. Seta gave me the grounding I needed for the workplace.
What was the transition like from training at Seta to working on site at Aardvarc?
It was my first experience of working in an engineering company so it was a big change, but what I had learned at Seta made the path much smoother.
What kind of work do you do at Aardvarc?
My work focuses on high voltage switchgear. I help to install it, test it and maintain it. I am also involved in stripping out switchgear and replacing it. The work has taken me all around the country and I often work on sites such as electricity substations, which is very interesting.
What has life been like at Aardvarc?
It’s been a good journey for me and a great experience, the team here have been fantastic and have helped me to settle in.
Since completing my apprenticeship, I have been training to be a commissioning engineer at Aardvarc, which is the next stage in my career.
What advice would you give to anyone considering an engineering apprenticeship? Why should they apply?
It’s rewarding, you can earn money during your apprenticeship and you can have a good career at the end of it.
Take the bull by the horns and go ahead and do it!
