As an excellent advanced program in practical turning, this course builds on a candidates turning experience and introduces them to a number of more complicated turning operations. Instruction takes place both in the classroom and in Seta’s state-of-the-art workshops.

This course is designed for those with an understanding of turning principles and practice or who have attended Course No. 501 - Introduction to Turning.


  • Safety relevant to turning
  • Assessment exercise:- 3-jaw chuck exercises to determine candidate standard
  • Basic turning refresher:- measuring instruments, cutting tools and coolants
  • Turning operations: 4-jaw chucks; in-between centres; face plate (special set-up using counter weights); fixed steady; travelling steady; taper turning (compound slide, offset tailstock, T.T.A.): screwcutting
  • Faults recognition:- guidance on turning faults and means of avoiding them
