Engineering Training Instructor / Assessor (Multi-skilled Machining)

Sunderland Engineering Training Association (SETA) is a vibrant and well respected specialist independent training provider. Due to retirement we are currently seeking an experienced Multi-Skilled Machining Instructor / Assessor to work from our training facility in Washington, Tyne & Wear.

The successful applicant is likely to be a time served machinist or toolmaker. You must be proficient in manual and CNC machining (both turning and milling) as well as surface grinding and basic hand fitting techniques.

Ideally you will have recent experience in delivering engineering apprenticeship training and assessment. You should have a real enthusiasm, and passion for teaching training and learning, and be good at transferring your skills to young learners. You should ideally hold a teaching qualification.

Main Duties:

  • Develop high quality teaching and learning resources
  • Deliver apprentice training programmes for manual and CNC machining based on the Engineering Technician: Machinist – Advanced Manufacturing Engineering standard
  • Develop and deliver high quality commercial training programmes
  • Develop and maintain good and outstanding review, assessment and examination practices
  • Maintain learner training records as required by awarding bodies
  • Support the growth of apprenticeships and standalone training programmes


  • Technical Certificate in mechanical/manufacturing engineering (L3 minimum) eg ONC; BTEC – Essential
  • Higher technical certificate in mechanical/manufacturing engineering (L4 or Higher eg HNC; Degree – Desirable
  • Teaching qualification – Desirable, but not essential, as training will be given to a suitable individual wishing to move into the engineering skills training sector.
  • Assessors qualification - Desirable
  • Internal Verifiers qualification - Desirable

Skills and Experience:

  • Apprentice trained machinist (L3 minimum) – Essential
  • Significant industry experience - Essential
  • Experience of delivering apprenticeship training, preferably using the new Engineering Technician standard – Desirable
  • Experience in observing, assessing and verifying learners work - Desirable
